Proteases as the key to new medical therapies - ProtPath

The Research Training Group 2606 “ProtPath - Understanding protease functions in cellular pathways through discovery and analysis of protease substrates”, which was established at the University of Freiburg in 2021, has received renewed funding. ProtPath investigates proteases - enzymes that play an important role in almost all biological processes. Proteases specifically cleave proteins and perform two central functions: They remove defective proteins from the organism or generate new protein products with altered properties and localizations through limited cleavage. The diversity of over 460 different proteases in humans alone underlines their physiological importance. At the same time, malfunctions of these enzymes are involved in serious diseases, which is why they are important targets for drugs and are already specifically inhibited in many therapies.

“The continued funding of the research training group gives us the opportunity to specifically improve our already well-established doctoral program and to implement our long-term research projects to elucidate the diverse functions of proteases,” says Prof. Dr. Thomas Reinheckel, Professor of Molecular Medicine / Cellular Pathomechanisms at the University of Freiburg and ProtPath spokesperson.
