Relevant information/documents required

 

CV, Personal data/contact details;

Bachelor and Master degrees (or equivalent) - transcripts and certificates;

University entrance qualification certificate and transcript;

Proof of English proficiency;

Two reference letters;

Motivation letter and research interest - You will select here the project you want to apply for, and will be able to indicate a second preference.

 

Selection procedure

 

Step1: Evaluation of written application

The RTG admission committee ranks eligible candidates for:

  • their motivation as expressed in the application letter
  • reasoning for choosing certain PhD projects
  • qualification/knowledge on subject of PhD projects
  • marks and duration of undergraduate studies
  • reputation of the undergraduate University
  • active contributions to student and/or scientific communities

        

Outcome step 1: Short listed candidates (about 20) are invited for Web-based Tandem Interviews.

 

Step 2: Web-based Tandem Interviews

Candidates will discuss an original article from the anticipated research field and be asked about the relevant keywords and concepts in a Tandem Interview of 30 minutes (by 2 professors which might not be their supervisors) to test their basic scientific knowledge and their capabilities of analysing a scientific publication. The article is send to the applicant upon invitation to this interview. Further points for discussion will be the candidate’s interest and motivation in science and career plans for the future.

 

Outcome step 2: Short listed candidates are invited for interviews in Freiburg.

 

Step 3: Individual interviews in Freiburg

Candidates present their previous research work (e.g. Master) to the admission committee. This is a 10-min presentation (flipchart, no Powerpoint) followed by a 5-min question round.

In addition, each candidate has at least one 25 min individual interview in English with prospective PhD supervisors.

There will be possibilities to see the labs and facilities, learn details about the PhD procedures, and get to know how to live in Freiburg.
